Brianna Duttry

A magical start to hopefully a series of books by debut author Brianna Duttry

One of my favorite genres to read is fantasy novels or novels that bring magical creatures to life in our present world. Brianna Duttry does a fantastic job of creating such a world in her book, The Ring of Destiny. I won’t spoil much more of the story here, but I encourage you to read my full review of the book just right for middle schoolers. Brianna contacted me about her book, and I enjoyed learning more about her as an author as much as I enjoyed her book.

What inspired you to write a book?
For this particular book, I was at a Pittsburgh rock and gem show in Altoona, PA when I found the gorgeous ring I bought and later was inspired to write a story about the ring having magical properties.

Story Card

Was there a book or author that you admired that played a role when developing your book?
There wasn’t a specific author or book in mind when I was working on this. But there are so many talented writers out there that I have enjoyed over the years.

It is often said that in order to write something, you must believe in what you are writing. Do you agree with that?
Yes I do. If you can’t see it clearly, then how will anyone else?

Do you have a set schedule for writing, or are you one of those who write only when they feel inspired?
A little of both. When I was writing this book I had at least 1 to 2 hours a night to work on it. And at other times, like writing screenplays or poetry, I wait for more inspiration to strike.

Tell us about your writing style, how is it different from other writers?
I would say that I have an open approach to my storytelling that gives the reader a chance to insert themselves into the story or see it how they take the words off the page.

What, according to you, is the hardest thing about writing? What would you say is the easiest aspect of writing?
The hardest thing about writing to me is networking because I’m not used to getting out there to a big audience. (But hopefully that will change.) I would say the easiest aspect of writing, at least for me, is coming up with ideas for good stories. I have plenty of dreams that help me with that too. But not all of them are followed through. I have an overactive creative mind. I’m always jotting names and ideas down to save for later.

Any advice you would like to give to aspiring writers?
Yes, I would say that no matter what you do don’t give up. Even if you get rejections, (we all do don’t we?) keep on trying and follow your heart. You never know when your story can become a bestseller.

Are you working on something new at the moment?
I am attempting to write a children’s detective series. It is my first go at mystery so I’m taking my time to get it right.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
I appreciate any interest you have in my work and look forward to sharing a lot more with you in the future.
