The book starts with two girls whispering about Harold, who may have said something mean. This is a scenario we all find ourselves in too frequently. Most people know what it is like to be negatively talked about behind their back. Once kids grasp the idea of gossip, it doesn’t go away. Harold hears something different from what the two girls are talking about, which causes a day full of miscommunication.

I lack toast and taller ants

Harold Heard Butt Cake is a fun read for elementary schoolers. It is a simple story about “selective” hearing. Once emotions take hold of you, it can be hard to comprehend what people are saying. You begin to hear what you want to, which is the lesson. Harold Heard Butt Cake is trying to teach kids to take a step back and listen to what someone says when you think you’ve heard something mean or negative. Even as an adult, I could work on!

Story Card

The illustrations reinforce the emotions of miscommunication

Harold shows sad, frustrated, and scared faces throughout the book as you walk through his day. Pictures of what he thinks he hears add to the story’s humor. A piece of bread with snails oozing out of it comes to mind first. Then there is the “butt cake” that transforms into bundt cake as Harold sits down to enjoy with his warmhearted parents. The illustrations have a soft glow to them, and the colors are calming.

Make your own “butt cake”

Included at the end of the book is a bundt cake recipe. I enjoy when children’s books have fun activities with friends and family. Plus, the recipe looks delicious! Overall, Harold Heard Butt Cake was enjoyable and something to refer back to when your elementary schooler is working through listening versus hearing.
